What is a Panchakarma

Pancha means five and Karama means actions. Panchakarma is a truly unique Ayurvedic detoxification which uses various treatments and medicines to cleanse, restore and heal your body, mind and spirit. Your treatment will begin with a consultation with your doctor who you will also meet with every day. Your unique treatment plan will also be developed and tailored on a daily basis. You can learn much more about the history, process and benefits of Panchakarma here.

Who is it Suited For?

A Panchakarma is unlike the health or yoga retreat that you may be used to seeing or experiencing. It is not about spending a week or two in a sunny country relaxing with a book, some nice food and a few yoga sessions each day. Some times, the Panchakarma experience will not enjoyable. Sometimes it will feel really uncomfortable - physically and emotionally. But the results are profound! And they are unlike anything you can achieve by focusing only on food, relaxation and movement. Panchakarma goes deep into your cells. It clears and cleans your from the inside out. It can be for anyone who wants a full body cleanse and detox, but mostly it is for someone who has long-standing deep-seated health challenges. These may be physical, such as arthritis, eczema, dermatitis, weight challenges, gut issues, joint or muscle injuries, or it may be mental and emotional such as anxiety, depression, mood swings or hormonal imbalances. Panchakarma is also highly recommended for women with menstrual challenges, fertility issues or preparing for pregnancy.

Why Sitaram Beach Resort?

Sitaram Ayurvedic Beach Resorts is one of the most authentic, traditional and longest-running Ayurvedic retreats in the world. The location is breath-taking, the facilities are clean and beautiful and the staff feel like family. The doctors and practitioners are all highly experienced, kind, caring and professional. The additional classes and experiences also make for an even more rewarding and fulfilling stay.

Why Go With a Group?

You can absolutely travel to India and do a Panchakarma on your own, and that is a different experience which may be preferred for some. For others, a group experience provides the extra support, safety and community that truly deepens and enhances the experience. Panchakarma is not like a typical “retreat” that we experience in Australia on Bali or Thailand. It is not designed just to help you relax. It’s a rigourous and intensive Ayurvedic experience based on medicinal and therapeutic treatments and remedies to help you deeply cleanse and heal. Some of the components can feel a little new and uncomfortable, and the locals, while super professional and friendly, don’t always explain exactly what’s going on and why. This is where I come in. With knowledge and experience in Ayurveda and Panchakarma, I will guide you through exactly what is happening and why and how it is helping your body, mind and spirit. I will be there on call to support you through the joy and the challenges and answer all of your questions. We will also have daily sessions to learn, connect and support one-another. You will feel held ever-step of the way, and without a doubt, you will make some beautiful new fiends!

What can I expect each day?

Each day will be a little different, however most certainly every day you will have a consult with your Ayurvedic doctor, a two hour Ayurvedic Treatment, the option to attend two yoga classes - morning and afternoon, three delicious Ayurvedically prepared meals, beach access at your doorstep, and various activities and experiences which change day to day, from Indian Dance Therapy, to Cooking Classes, to Laughter Yoga, and Ayurvedic Information Workshops. As a group, we will dine together and also meet each day to discuss how we’re feeling, ask any questions and be supported through the process. It is quite a deep and intensive experience so having the safety and support of a familiar group can really help both physically and emotionally. And of course, in between your treatments, yoga, meals, and consultations, there will be plenty of time to read, relax and restore your body, mind and spirit.

What can I expect to eat?

The food will be uniquely tailored to your dosha, current imbalances, health challenges and health goals. Each day, you will enjoy seasonal fruits, freshly-squeezed juice of local fruit and an Ayurvedically prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner. The texture and flavour of your food will change depending upon your dosha and where you are in your treatment. Most of the food uses Indian herbs and spices, and there are also options for simpler meals such as soup, sautéed vegetables, kitchari and rice.

How will I feel?

This is difficult to answer as everyone’s experience is so unique. Some people feel great most of the time, and for others it can bring up a lot of emotion. However this can actually be a great sign. As the body cleanses, these emotions are brought to the surface so that they can be released. There will be a lot of support and care throughout the whole experience so that you never feel a lone. By the end of the Panchakarma, you will feel much lighter - physically and mentally. You should also notice some big changes in your digestion and overall mood which will stretch far beyond the duration of your stay. A Panchakarma treatment is deep and it’s benefits are long lasting. You will feel the positive effects from your Panchakarma treatment for days, week, months and years to come. Though it is important that once you arrive home from the treatment, you don’t just jump straight back into old food and lifestyle habits. Panchakarma provides you with a clean slate. But it is up to you to water the powerful seeds of health and healing that you have planted.

Will there be yoga?

Yes! There are yoga classes every day, two in the morning and one in the afternoon. Some days you will also receive a private yoga, meditation or pranayama session to help with your unique health challenges and goals. Every few days, you can also attend the unique experience of Laughter Yoga, as well as other activities such as Indian Dance Therapy, Ayurvedic Workshops and Cooking Classes.

What are benefits of Panchakarma?

We wash our external body every day. We have a shower, we wash our hair, we brush our teeth. Sometimes we may even wash our eyes and clean our ears. But how about our insides? How are they getting cleaned? This is what Panchakarma is all about. It’s about full cleaning and restoring your body, mind, and spirit from the inside out. The first few days are all about oileiation - that is, warm oil to loosen the toxins in your body. This might be done via food, warm oil massage, steam and nasya nasal oil. Once the toxins are loose, it’s time to use various techniques and remedies to remove them from the body. Next, it’s time to restore strength and rejuvenate with restorative foods, practices and treatments. You will finish feeling like a new person with a clean system, a light body, a fresh mind and an energised spirit. The key is to maintain this renewed feeling of health and wellness in your everyday life once you get home. Through the daily sessions we have together, I will help you learn and understand the Ayurvedic food, lifestyle practices and mind-set to accomplish just that. The Panchakarma experience is just the start. It’s the fresh foundation you need to then embark on a healthier lifestyle of strength, energy, immunity and healing.

How much will it cost?

The total cost of the 12 day Panchakarma will be $6,000 AUD. This does not include flights which will need to be arranged individually. Please let us know if you would like support arranging flights. Sitaram will arrange transport transfer services to and from Kochi Airport. It takes approximately 1.5 hours from the airport to the resort. While the rooms can accommodate two people, it is recommended that you take your own private villa, unless you are coming with your partner or a very close friend. The Panchakarma experience is very intensive and personal and can involve detoxification processes which require the use of the bathroom. This may not be so enjoyable with someone you do not know well. To learn more about the specifics of the Panchakarma treatment, please click here.
